Rosie's Rascals Dolls
-
Pictured here are a few of the dolls that I have made over the years. When I was 10 years old my mother, who was a seamtress, gave me her leftover scraps and let me play with them on her treadle machine. I learned to sew by making doll clothing. I attempted to make several rag dolls which all ended in disaster. I even remember cutting off some of my own hair in an attempt to make a wig for a doll I was making.
Having never owned a doll longer than about 12 inches as a child, I dreamed of having one that was lifesize. Not until I was an adult did that dream come true. I have continued to enjoy sewing for more than 40 years.
Starting in March 1984, I began making these dolls, mostly as a hobby. As people would see them and want one or twins, I would make dolls for others. I have made and adopted out several dolls, mostly during the years our 3 children were in college, to help with their college expenses. I have kept 2 of the dolls as samples for people to see when they visit my home (A red haired, freckle faced boy and a blond blue eyed girl).
In the summer of 1984 my twins, Stephen & Stephanie, fresh out of high school, didn't have jobs, so they helped me make dolls. It is the one summer that stands out in my memory because we had such a wonderful time together! We made the dolls bald and naked.
By Christmas I had made hair & clothing for them and they'd all been adopted. Some of my dolls have gone overseas to Hong Kong, Africa, and other parts of the world.
Rosie's Rascals are approximately 21" tall, and come wearing hand made clothing. They can wear ready-made clothing, size 9 months, and their shoe size is 2.
Each soft sculptured Rosie's Rascal is numbered, given a name, and a birth certificate.
Some of their special features are:
- Hand Embroidered Eyes, Blue, Green, or Brown
- Knee, Elbow, and Fanny Dimples
- Fingers, Toes, Ears, and Tummy Buttons
- Bolted movable Arm and Leg Joints (My pet peeve is dolls whose arms and legs come off. So I wanted to create a doll who wouldn't lose its arms or legs.)
- Light or dark Blonde, Black, Red, or Brunette hair, straight or curly
- Boy or girl
- White or black skin
I don't make them much anymore, because they don't provide a leveraged income. It's back to a hobby again. However, I do make them by request for special occasions, from time to time. $95 and up, depending on clothing requested.
I occasionally restore old dolls as well...and have pictured one below that I restored recently. Our daughter, Stephanie, found her at a flea market and wanted me to restore her for our Granddaughter, Kiana. She was dirty and naked with matted hair and had one eye that wouldn't stay open. I cleaned her up, made her some clothing, fixed her eye...and she is ready for love again.

This is doll (#175) that I made for a friend for her 5 year old daughter. This doll is special because she was born 01/01/01 at 1:01 A.M. Yes, that's right, I stayed up New Year's Eve and finished her.

Restored Flea Market Doll
We should have taken a "Before" picture so that you could see the transformation. Now she is pretty and clean with a new dress. Her hair is shining thanks to Nu Skin Shampoo and Conditioner.
